Experimental performance at the intersection of art and technology
Clubhouse in the Cloud was a series of real-time variety and circus performances streamed on Instagram Live during the pandemic. Performers from all over the country were streamed in live and re-broadcast to our audiences, from theatres, stages, and aerial studios in NYC, Chicago, LA, Dallas, Omaha, and beyond.
The XR Studio produces a constantly evolving series of performances, exhibitions, and experiments in collaboration with faculty in theatre, dance, experimental music, art, film, and communications.
Metapersonae is an experimental performance by Fiona X Ju. It is a performance installation featuring 8-channel surround sound, lights, and physical performance. It crafts fixed media with the object-based audio system and interactive lighting design.
What is familiar transforms into the alien; original sounds evolve into a digital living entity, continuously deconstructing and morphing in real-time. Amidst this vastness and emptiness, "the body" becomes a living paradox. Is it a physical presence, a virtual avatar, or a combination of the two? The artist embodies both the question and its silent answer, existing simultaneously as void and potential.
Echoes is an experimental performance produced in the XR Studio in collaboration with cellist Dennis Park of the LSU School of Music, and Irina Kruchinina of the School of Communication.
Using the XR Studio's LED wall as a monitor of the camera feed creates a hall of mirrors effect, slowing the temporal experience of the performance, and overlapping ripples of moments to diffuse the audience's perception.
Foiled is an immersive exploration of material and intention, reducing narrative and production to fundamentals to explore reflections of time and perception. It is being developed in collaboration with students from the Experimental Music PhD program.
